We had an agreement? So what? CaixaBank couldn't give a...

Recent comparisons between bank agreements and social media terms and conditions have the banking world in a tizz. Social media websites and apps are known for reserving the right to update their usage terms and conditions at will. You’re using their product so maybe that’s perfectly fair.

But what about banks? A disgruntled CaixaBank client explains how he opened a current account with this bank at the same time as starting a business account. He didn’t want the personal current account but, with assurances that he would never incur any commissions and the gratitude of the employees in the office, who could mark up another new account to their bosses at the end of the month, he foolishly accepted the agreement.

Moneygrabbers suggests that if you give the bank your money to look after and they can use this money to generate other income, that should be enough. “La Caixa” has a well-earned reputation for charging commissions on “absolutely everything” and, despite the assurances received, our source indicates that he was forced to ask for refunds on many commissions. Generally speaking, the bank duly acted as per the agreement to refund any commissions. Until it didn’t. Until Mr. Masip.

Perhaps CaixaBank felt jealous of social media giants and decided to apply yet more commissions. Clients couldn’t leave, surely? The Bank Director, Mr. Iván Masip Bes, claimed he couldn’t help and then refused to answer anything further. The client indicated that either the commissions should be refunded or the account closed. The Director hid himself away and refused to answer. Despite clear instructions to close the account, the Director did nothing and instead blocked the client from closing his own account and labelled him a bad debtor as more and commissions landed on the account. Fair? We think not!
